As much as we love our location apps here at 3fold, the most frequent question I hear when I geek out about them is, “What’s that?” A question we’ve attempted to answer here, and here.
The next most popular question, especially amongst our clients, is, “How can we use it?”
Apps such as Foursquare, Loopt Pulse, Gowalla, MyTown, and many more are evolving beyond basic mobile location marketing. They can now be used by businesses and organizations to gauge moods, interest, and loyalty potential, then attach real incentives to cash in. Here are a few such uses.
1. Friend finding, friend recommendations
Connect nearby users who are friends, based on social net info such as Facebook friend lists. Match up people who have similar interests as stated in their public location-sharing app user profiles.
How this is useful: If there’s an event where participants might benefit from meeting people with similar interests, they might also join an on-the-go social network of nearby people, complete with profiles to browse. The venue hosting the event could increase the chances that people will stick around longer, possibly benefiting that business in terms of products and services purchased.
2. Geofencing
Use location apps that searches or scans for all users within a certain range of a given location to push out promotions or incentives for foot traffic or action.
How this is useful: Offer time-limited special promotions via push notification to mobile devices, for example, “The next 10 people to come in get a free coffee!” Bringing people in increases the chances of them purchasing or using the services…now and in the future.
3. Crowdsourcing
Gather information from users about an event, ideas for improving services, and so on.
How this is useful: Allows organizations to poll for input from attendees, customers, or the general public about ways to improve products, events, and services. Could also lead to offering relevant on-the-spot discounts, or virtual coupons for future use.
4. Crowd control
Manage large crowds with limited staff by using incentives.
How this is useful: Poll for mobile devices in the vicinity running an existing or custom location-sharing app, then offer an incentive to users to join a network for onsite discounts, then push notifications about entrances, exists, transit, travel routes, to help ease crowd flow bottlenecks.
