A few days ago, I read a great blog post by David Spark of Spark Media Solutions. In it he writes about creating a personal Twitter policy: “The reason I recommend this is because extremely well known and respected social media gurus don’t seem to have any personal policy whatsoever. Twitter just becomes this avenue for which they blast out every random thought that crosses their mind.”
Spark’s post got me thinking about my own Twitter policies. Mind if I share?
I, Lesley, am on Twitter to:
Share interesting and relevant content related to marketing, public relations, and social media
Promote 3Fold, and our client’s great work in the community
Connect with people in my community and across the world who can offer my industry advice, brighten my day, or answer my questions.
Encourage others by reading their blogs, commenting on their tweets, and being a smiling friendly face on people’s screens. This means that sometimes I tweet about Michael Jackson, or chocolate pudding, or what I’m having for dinner. I’m human!
Stalk journalists… and attempt to better understand their beats by reading their tweets.
In addition
I don’t believe…
….in the numbers game. I’m not on Twitter to gain 5 million followers and feel really popular.
….in posting more than 10 times a day. Sometimes I break this rule ,but for the most part I’m really not interesting enough to say more than 10 tweets!
….in having extremely personal conversations through Twitter. I use Direct Message (DM) when I don’t think anyone else will care about the conversation, or that it won’t provide value to my other followers.
….in following people who don’t have a bio on their Twitter handle, or whose last 5 tweets don’t interest me.
I do believe…
….in always following people who live in the Sacramento region because I LOVE my community and want to connect with everyone from moms to nonprofits to small business owners. You never know how we can help each other out, right?
….in trying to tweet at least 5 times per day. I want people to not forget who I am. Plus, I have lots to say!
….in tools like Tweetdeck. They make life so much easier!
What’s your Twitter policy?

Our e-communications manager forwarded this to us and we are going to adopt these policies … replacing Sacramento for Spokane, of course. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for reading our blog Pam, and for taking the time to comment. I’m glad we could be of help. I’ll have to start following you on Twitter today!
