As with all things amazing, our office decided to take a democratic vote on what types of organizations we desire to take on as a company. Kim, being the master do-gooder that she is, made an official voting form for every 3Fold team member to have their say. And boy, did everyone have their opinions...from furry friends to youth-in-crisis, to adult immigrants needing literacy services. No doubt, our passion to help others crossed all cultural, age and socio-economic barriers. We also realized the huge need for money, donations and time in so many different categories. When it comes down to it, we just want to help worthy organizations as they help others. So, if you're a local nonprofit reading all this with a flutter in your heart and a smile on your face...please apply! Changing lives... Here's a great story about how River City’s services change lives. Last month, Eileen (River City Executive Director) went to buy chairs for the waiting room at the food bank. Her salesman told her he was a former client. The story: Pete is a single parent in his mid-forties, with a daughter and a son. A while back, his wife left him. He lost his job in this down economy, which led to losing their home. He was stressed, without a support network, and concerned for his kids. As a single father with different gender children, he was ineligible for the local shelters (he and his children would have been split up). Together, the family slept in the car a night before finding River City Food Bank. At River City, Pete and his children got a 3-day supply of healthy food and a 3-night hotel voucher. It was just enough help to allow Pete to focus on what he was going to do next. He used the time at the hotel to contact all possible resources, and got his family into some transitional housing. From there, he found a job and then permanent housing. When Pete met Eileen at the furniture store, he told her, “Thanks to River City, my kids never missed a meal, only had to sleep in the car one night, and never missed a day of school.” If it had been up to Pete, he would have given Eileen the chairs and anything else she needed from the furniture store. |
