A secret (shhhhhh) about social media

I’ve got a secret, and I’m willing to share it with ya’ll.

Learning the ins and outs of social media isn’t really all that difficult. You just need to: a. make the time and b. know where to look for the right resources. I find the most informative information using Twitter. In fact, as many will attest, Twitter is a really good way to both share and find interesting websites, blogs, and articles that you don’t see anywhere else. (Or, that you see in mainstream media weeks after it’s already hit the Twitter feeds).

A few great resources I’d like to share today are:

1. Alltop.com: One of the best sites for finding blogs by industry. My friend Sarah emailed me today because she needed to find surf blogs for a project she’s doing during her last quarter as an MBA student. I directed her to Alltop because it has the most popular blogs all in one location.

2. 27 Twitter Applications Your Small Business Can Use Today: Found this site through Twitter. One application that I’m particularly excited to use on this very blog is called “Twit This” which makes it easy for readers to push one button that installs a short link on Twitter back to you post. One company using this tool effectively is Immediate Future out of the UK. They also have a GREAT new guide available on their homepage called Twitter for PR and Marketing. Give it a read!

3. NearbyTweets is a site that connects users to other people who are using Twitter in their area. Launched only two months ago, it’s just one more example of how companies are making social media even easier to use. For us, connecting with other businesses and nonprofits in the Sacramento region is an effective way to spread our name and the work we do for clients.

4. Kosmix.com: is a web site which contains daily news from varied sources. Find out what’s hot on YouTube, what people are talking about on Twitter, the most popular pictures on Flickr, and popular search trends. (Today, everyone is looking for info on the Conficker worm.)

So, what are you still doing here? Go surf the world wide web and get learning! (Or, if you’re still majorly confused, call us about delivering a social media training to you and your staff.)
